The New Now Festival is a momentous, transformative return to in-person programming where we invite you to join us in simultaneously exploring and expanding the potentials of our home, the Behnke Center for Contemporary Performance. We are developing new pathways between forms and between the worlds created within the building and the world outside. Following the postponment of The Violet Symphony in March 2020, Timothy White Eagle continued to be in conversation with collaborators Paul Budraitis, HATLO, and John Wilson pondering death rituals, early spritual expression, and first mythologies. Over the summer White Eagle also continued an exploratory collaboration/backyard jam session with cellist Lori Goldston. What began as a series of conversations and improvisations has become a work in progress performance.
In this work-in-progress performance, Death and Mourning After, White Eagle & Goldston are considering these themes, as well as humanity’s search for answers which lay out of reach, beyond the veil of death, all of which are threaded in the performance.
On the Boards and La Mama invite you to join us for a special live stream of the performance followed by an intimate conversation hosted by OtB’s Artistic Director, Rachel Cook with the artists about their process and practice.
Death and Mourning After continues White Eagle’s exploration of themes central to The Violet Symphony, which was originally scheduled to premiere at OtB in March 2020.

TIMOTHY WHITE EAGLE is a mixed-race artist. His art practice rises from a decades long exploration of traditional ritual and embodiment practice. He crafts experiences and objects designed to heal both creator and audience. His preferred mediums include objects, photography, performance and installed space. His work has been presented on three continents. He was the recipient of the WAA/AIP Launch Pad award1 in 2019, as well as a Seattle City Artist award in 2020. He received a BFA in Theater from U of Utah. In 2015, he was the indigenous advisor for Taylor Mac during the creation of A 24-Decade History. In 2016, White Eagle was one of the Dandy Minions in the 24-hour marathon performance of A 24-Decade History performed in New York City and has been on tour nationally and internationally with Taylor Mac as the Artistic Director for the Dandy Minions. Timothy White Eagle was a 18/19 On the Boards Artist in Residence. He was working on the world premiere of The Violet Symphony, which was scheduled to open on March 19, 2020, before being postponed due to COVID-19.
LORI GOLDSTON is classically trained and rigorously de-trained, possessor of a restless, semi-feral spirit, Lori Goldston is a cellist, composer, improvisor, producer, writer and teacher from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist, amplified or acoustic, is full, textured, committed and original. A relentless inquirer, she wanders recklessly across borders that separate genre, discipline, time and geography, performing in clubs, cafes, galleries, arenas, concert halls, sheds, ceremonies, barbecues, and stadiums.

You and a stranger meet on opposite ends of a table, separated by a pane of glass. Using a script and a few simple objects, a simple exercise of working together becomes an experience of profound connection with another person.

On a simple phone call, you and another audience member – nameless strangers to one another – follow a carefully crafted set of directives. Over the course of the journey, a portrait of each other emerges through fleeting moments of exposure and the simple sound of an unseen voice.
