The Other Shore: Always Now
zoe | juniper

Audiences are guided through new points of view from which to witness a dance performance

Always Now is the first of two complementary sections of zoe | juniper’s performance, The Other Shore. In Always Now, the audience is guided to experience dance lying comfortably on the floor, while multiple dancers move around and above them. With an exciting cast of 6 local and international dancers, Always Now explores perspective, lived experience, and body language. Each audience member experiences their own unique performance based on where they are lying, in essence, co-choreographing the performance with Zoe. Sound designer Bobby McElver (last at On the Boards with Andrew Schneider’s YOUARENOWHERE) creates a unique sonic experience with his use of cutting-edge sound technology, Wave Field Synthesis. Marrying these elements creates a unique and otherworldly experience.

More About The Other Shore

The Other Shore is an immersive media installation space, inviting intimate groups of audience members to experience a performance from the ground up.

At the intersection of dance, installation, video, and technology, The Other Shore is presented in two distinct sections and seeks to spark a simple shift in the structure of traditional performance to alter the relationship between audience and dancer.

In collaboration with designers Sara Brown, Evan Christian Anderson, and Bobby McElver, the work aims to expose vulnerabilities of performers and audiences. As well as examine the experience of seeing and being seen, now.

Image Descriptions:

Image 1: A bird's eye view of 5 dancers, 3 Black and 2 White, laying on their backs, surrounded by an installation of shimmering copper and bronze crinkled fabrics. They are surrounded by darkness aside from the bronze foil installation and lit from a single warm colored spotlight above them. The dancers are dressed all in white, except for the middle dancer who is shirtless.

Image 2: In this vertical image, the golden foil installation is in focus in the foreground, surrounded by darkness, with 4 lights shining from the top left corner. 2 Black dancers and one white dancer are in background out of focus, all in different poses, limbs at different angles.
