Swim Pony
Helmed by Artistic Director Adrienne Mackey (she/her), Swim Pony is a devised theater and game company with a commitment to interdisciplinary, risk-taking live performance. Their genre-defying work is created by an ensemble that experiments with expanding the definition of what “theater” can be and lifting up tactile, sensory and experiential storytelling. The company’s original projects include SURVIVE!, a 22,000 sq ft choose-your-own-adventure installation exploring humanity’s place within the universe; LADY M, a feminist re-imagining of Shakespeare’s Macbeth; THE GIANT SQUID, a “crypto-zoology-horror-comedy” performed in science lecture halls across Philadelphia; and THE BALLAD OF JOE HILL, a play with music created for Eastern State Penitentiary about the execution of a historic labor icon. Most recently, Swim Pony has melded game design with theater in projects like TRAILOFF – an immersive mobile app created in collaboration with the PA Environmental Council using GPS to embed original BIPOC stories onto nature trails; AQUA MAROONED!, a wildlife card game commissioned by the Alliance for Watershed Education; and WAR OF THE WORLDS, a theater/game experience created with Drexel's Entrepreneurial Game Studio which explored alien invasion as a metaphor for gentrification. Accolades include two Knight Arts Challenges, a Philly Magazine “Best Of” for TRAILOFF, and a 2023 Games4Change Award nomination. Past residencies: FringeArts, Orchard Project, and Blast Theory. Touring to: FringeArts, Edinburgh Fringe, ASU, Annenberg Center for Perf. Arts, Eastern State Pen., Arcadia, UArts, Swarthmore, CEC. AQUA MAROONED! shared at 40 locations across the US.
