"...powerful imagination and psychological force." - The New York Times
As a child Dana Michelwould drape a yellow towel on her head to emulate the blond girls at school. This memory became the impetus for a ritualistic work mashing black culture stereotypes into a fascinating alter-ego. Michel sheds layers and encounters talismans in a gradual, unsettling metamorphosis.
Strongly influenced by the aesthetics of fashion, music videos, queer culture, and comedy, Michel’s powerfully unique style of work is uber-physical, queasily funny, and fiercely contemporary. Yellow Towel was named one of the top shows of 2014 by Time Out New York.
Dana Michel is a live artist. Her works interact with the expanded fields of improvisation, choreography, sculpture, comedy, hip-hop, cinematography, techno, poetry, psychology, dub and social commentary to create a centrifuge of experience.
